Documentation

Learn the workflow, not just the buttons.

The documentation is organized to help you get started, configure standards, understand the daily workflow, and troubleshoot issues without guessing.

Getting Started

Install the extension, open the panel, understand the main tabs, and place your first cabinet using a family, preset, and dimensional setup that matches your project.

Configuring Standards

Set up the reusable defaults that should guide new cabinets: construction logic, materials, profiles, and other standards that help the workflow stay consistent across projects.

Workflow Basics

Learn how the tabs work together: insert cabinets, edit them safely, manage materials, generate trim and surfaces, add layout references, and prepare for output.

Troubleshooting

Use logs, common error patterns, FAQ answers, and step-by-step checks to understand why a command failed, why a field is hidden, or why the result does not match your expectation.

Feature instructions

The same workflows are available inside ShopReady Cabinets when you turn on Help.

How to use: Gather project intent and site constraints, propose a rule-based plan, preview or apply deterministic operations, validate, then report any unsupported requests.

Project Design Protocol

Layout / Project tools — Project Design Protocol

Keeps project requirements, dimensional references, design decisions and verification evidence together.

How to use: Refresh from project, record the intended rooms and cabinetry requirements, choose applicable construction styles, then Save requirements. Build with the extension's tools. Check current model and reconcile the results with the recorded requirements before handoff.

  • Unverified requirements remain open questions; a saved requirement is not a fabrication approval.
Construction Styles library and type overrides

Design / Settings — Construction Styles

Organizes reusable shop construction in nested folders with search, favorites and independent configurations for fifteen cabinet types.

How to use: Open Construction Styles, choose a starter and duplicate it for your shop. Edit Shared settings first, then select each cabinet-type scope needing an override. Use Reset on a field to return to its inherited/default value. Save the style and Use in Design. Import an existing preset without deleting it, or use a style file to transfer a complete recipe.

  • Verify imported material and profile dependencies before use. Existing cabinets require an explicit style or preset apply.
Space Planner rooms, floors and cabinet blocks

Layout — Space Planner

Maintains a measured room draft with references, openings, objects and cabinet blocks that can be reviewed and applied through managed builders.

How to use: Start or load the intended room and floor. Enter measured wall spans and height, add doors/windows/outlets from consistent references, then place cabinet blocks using the intended construction style. Use plan and elevation views to check position, depth and stacking. Resolve incomplete measurements and stale changes, review the proposed apply, then build or update the room through the planner.

  • Do not substitute ad-hoc geometry when the planner reports an unsupported case. Record the missing tool behavior and review the model after apply.
Slab edge wraps, center patterns and accent grooves

Design / Edit — Doors > Plain Slab; Drawers > Slab front

Builds a plain or patterned slab with optional solid edge stock, independent vertical/horizontal grooves and explicitly applied face molding.

How to use: Choose Plain Slab, select a pictured style, then open Customize details. Choose the perimeter and center pattern. Standard square, bevel and beaded wraps replace the slab edges with four mitered solid pieces at the same finished thickness. Choose the slab center material separately from Door Material for the wrap. Enable vertical or horizontal accents independently, choose two or three grooves, set the reference edge and first groove center offset, then Apply. For exposed drawer fronts, use the separate Drawers editor and choose Match doors or an independent slab style.

  • Profiles must fit the front and leave at least 1/8 inch of substrate. Existing fronts regenerate on Apply. Profiled fronts still require machining review before CNC use.
Equal shelf openings, peg holes and under-shelf bead

Design / Edit — Shelves

Separates shelf placement from drilling limits and includes attached under-shelf trim in the visible shelf assembly height.

How to use: Choose shelf mode, count, thickness and material. Use Equal Openings + Hole Sets for equal clear openings with support holes at the shelf locations. Set Peg Holes From Bottom and From Top to limit drilling independently of shelf clearances. To add the under-shelf bead, enable it and set its width, thickness, bead diameter and detail gap. Review the average clear gap and generated shelves before Apply.

  • Angled or cutout shelves and other edge/nosing details may be incompatible with the bead. Fixed shelf positions use their own placement and joinery rules.
Combined cabinet sections

Design / Edit — Front layout > Combined cabinet

Divides one cabinet into section openings with independent front layouts, shelves and drawer settings.

How to use: Enable the combined cabinet layout and set section count. Use Make sections equal to redistribute clear section widths, or enter and lock individual widths. Choose the front layout for each section and turn Include shelves on only where required. Set shelf construction in Shelves. Review drawer depth and slide mounting for each drawer section before creating or updating the cabinet.

  • Section widths share the available interior opening. Shelves still use the selected shelf mode and count.
Interior trays, drawers and slide-out shelves

Design > Edit — Interior storage

Adds hidden storage behind doors with exact placement, item-specific drawer construction and optional slide mounting partitions.

How to use: Select one cabinet and open Interior storage. For accurate placement, choose the item type and cabinet bay, enter the first bottom offset, quantity and underside-to-underside spacing, then Add item(s) at these heights. Select each item to set size and slides. Enable Use separate construction settings for this item to edit its material, thicknesses and joinery. Choose blocks or full-height partitions at the left and right slide-mounting offsets. Refresh preview, Check fit, then Apply cabinet changes.

  • Fit must be checked against doors
  • hinges
  • cabinet obstructions and the chosen slide. Catalog sizing rules can take precedence over manual clearance overrides.
Finished ends, rear scribes and wall setback

Design / Edit / Layout — Cabinet construction and placement

Conceals overlay back edges at exposed ends and reserves material to scribe a finished cabinet to the wall.

How to use: Mark the exposed left or right side as finished. Enter its rear scribe allowance, then set the cabinet-to-wall gap in Layout. Review total occupied depth and adjacent clearances. When using add-ons, choose whether the entered cabinet size includes them and confirm the final overall envelope before placement.

  • Review overall occupied dimensions with add-ons and scribes before fabrication.
Wall core, drywall and butt corners

Layout — Room Builder / Wall

Builds solid wall assemblies with a core and drywall layers, using butt joints at room corners.

How to use: Enter the room dimensions and select whether they were measured between finished faces or framing. Set stud depth and drywall thickness on each face; defaults are 3 1/2 inch core and 1/2 inch drywall. Place the room or draw a wall using its reference face and side. Load the generated room or wall before updating it; use opening tools for doors and windows.

  • Exterior sheathing and individual stud framing are not modeled by this wall assembly. Joined non-square corners require a supported layout.
Configurable windows and swinging room doors

Layout — Window / Door

Creates cased openings, sash and grid options, realistic door panels and controllable construction-door swings.

How to use: Select the host wall and a fixed measurement reference. Choose opening dimensions or outside casing dimensions. Set the window or door type, casing width/style, header and optional crown. For windows, choose sash type and top/bottom grids. For doors, set panel style, hinge side, swing direction and opening limit. Place closed, then change the current swing angle to check cabinet clearance. Load Selected before updating an existing opening.

  • Generic openings are design references; confirm manufacturer dimensions and installation allowances. Unlinked openings need an explicit jamb depth.
Unique working and dummy copies

Assemble — Cabinet copies

Creates independent cabinet variants while retaining the source cabinet and distinguishing dummy presentation copies.

How to use: Select the source cabinet, refresh the selection, choose placement and gap or XYZ offsets, then Create unique copy. Select the new occurrence before editing it. Use dummy copy visibility controls when preparing presentations and confirm which occurrences contribute to output.

  • Review copy classification and quantities before generating manufacturing or purchasing output.
Main Modeling View and native presentation

Output — Presentation

Prepares a clearer native SketchUp image, preserves a normal modeling view and exports PNG references for optional AI enhancement.

How to use: Save the model, select the intended cabinets or frame the current view, choose the appearance preset and camera option, then Prepare Presentation. Adjust light direction, depth shading and brightness to retain white cabinet detail. Save PNG at the selected width. Use Main Modeling View to return to ordinary SketchUp drawing or Restore Prior View to return to the captured state.

  • Native appearance is not a physically based photorealistic renderer. AI images require geometry and design review.
Eave fit and object clearances

Design > Edit — Space fit / Nearby objects

Adapts supported cabinet parts to measured slopes and obstruction envelopes while previewing drawer and shelf fit.

How to use: Select one cabinet. Pick the eave face or enter its rear height and angle, then set clearances. For obstructions, detect or pick a model object or add a measured clearance box. Set the object's position from cabinet left/front/bottom, size and gap. Choose open cutout or finished box-out and shelf/drawer fitting rules. Check fit, inspect the result, then Apply cabinet changes.

  • Check the generated parts and usable opening before release. Removing a fit removes the saved adaptation
  • not the source room object.
Appliance and installation clearance review

Layout — Appliances / Installation Fit

Places appliance bodies and reserved installation spaces, then reviews nearby cabinet and moving-part clearance envelopes.

How to use: Place an appliance using actual body dimensions, handle projection and door hinge geometry. Add an installation space with the manufacturer's left/right/top/front allowances. Load cabinet drawers and enter measured travel overrides if needed. Review Installation Fit and inspect reported conflicts before changing cabinetry.

  • This is a geometric review
  • not manufacturer approval. Confirm specifications
  • ventilation and service requirements separately.
Kitchen intervals and reviewed cabinet proposals

Layout — Kitchen Plan

Organizes base and upper cabinet lanes into measured wall intervals and builds reviewed proposals as editable cabinets.

How to use: Load the room, choose base or upper lane, and save its cabinet profile, depth, height and bottom elevation. Add an interval with wall reference start/end, purpose, locks and end treatments. Review Cabinet Proposal, resolve warnings, then Build Reviewed Cabinets. Use ordinary Edit on built cabinets; saving the plan draft alone does not rebuild them.

  • A stale proposal must be reviewed again after its inputs change.
Managed panels, trim and room adoption

Layout / Assemble — Managed Products

Creates tracked manufactured products and links reviewed existing cabinets or products to a room without replacing them with untracked geometry.

How to use: Choose New product or read a selected managed object. Set product kind, name, dimensions, stock and appearance, then placement. Configure the applicable front, trim path or cutouts and Create/Update. To adopt existing cabinets, choose room/wall, Review selection, then Adopt reviewed cabinets. Replacement requires a separate original/replacement review before applying it.

  • Use the applicable product controls; hidden fields do not imply every product supports every operation.
Cabinet shop schedules and reviewed packets

Output — Shop Requirements

Records purchase rules, assembly steps and explicit coverage for each cabinet occurrence, then exports a reviewed shop packet.

How to use: Load the project and choose a cabinet occurrence. Enter the schedule source, purchase rules, assembly steps and coverage decisions for construction, mounting, fronts, moving parts, supports and finishing. Save Draft. Review current geometry, manual edits, occurrence counts and units, confirm the review, then Review Current Schedule. Export the reviewed packet once required schedules are current.

  • Automatic part counts cannot infer every fastener
  • adhesive
  • support or installation requirement.
Reviewed purchasing quantities

Output — Purchasing

Combines material and supply requirements with shop inputs and review evidence for a purchasing package.

How to use: Load/Refresh Purchasing. Inspect stock sizes, units, edge lengths, inventory and supply coverage. Save the purchasing draft, confirm that the current model and quantities have been reviewed, then Review Purchasing Quantities. Export the reviewed package; refresh and review again after source changes.

  • Stale or incomplete reviews should be resolved before a reviewed export.
Production labels and printer setup

Output — Production Labels

Prepares labels from manual or nested parts, filters them and sends selected labels to export or a selected printer.

How to use: Save the project title, choose label stock, printer and media, then prepare Manual Labels or Nested Labels for the current output. Filter by cabinet or sheet and select the intended visible labels. Preview Selected before printing or exporting. Enable printing after successful package export only if that behavior is wanted.

  • Check a physical test label before a production batch.
Saved Project Compatibility and recovery

Output / Edit — Saved Project Compatibility / Part recovery

Inspects saved project records and provides reviewed metadata adoption or targeted recovery without silently guessing newer or damaged data.

How to use: Inspect project and read findings before making edits. Where offered, Review metadata adoption and inspect its scope before Apply reviewed metadata. Use Part recovery for missing tracking. Rebuild doors/drawers from current settings only when intentionally replacing manual front changes. Keep a known-good saved model before a recovery operation.

  • Compatibility inspection does not prove fabrication readiness.
Multiple SketchUp sessions

Application — ShopReady panel

Associates each panel with its owning SketchUp process and model context.

How to use: Open ShopReady from the SketchUp instance containing the intended model. Check the displayed model/session context before editing. If another instance owns the visible dialog, return to the intended instance and open its panel. Reload updated extension code in each instance that will use it; reloading one process does not update the others.

  • Do not assume a background SketchUp process has reloaded the newest Ruby code.
Open mudroom bench

Assemble — Open Bench

Creates a continuous seat over open panel supports or leg pairs. The top defines the width, depth and finished height; separate end insets position the support frame underneath it.

How to use: Open Assemble > Open Bench > Configure Open Bench. Enter the top width, depth and finished height, then top and support thicknesses. Set left and right end insets measured to the outside faces of the end supports. Choose rectangular, setback, footed panels or separate leg pairs. Choose the number of support stations, including the ends. Equal clear openings are calculated after deducting insets and all support thicknesses. For custom bays, enter all but the final bay; the last opening uses the remainder. For exact positions, enter interior support centerlines from the left edge of the top. Set top edges, optional molding, rails and materials. Add base around individual legs, select the exposed left/right outside ends, and optionally continue it along the back panels. Interior legs always wrap on every accessible face; the front bays remain open. Add optional 3/4-inch backs between supports. Choose Plain, Beadboard, V-board or Shiplap for those backs. Review perspective, front, side and top previews. Place Bench starts a click-to-place tool; click the front-left floor point in SketchUp, or Escape to cancel. Select an existing bench and click Edit Selected Bench to edit it, or use Edit Open Bench on the context menu. Apply Bench Changes rebuilds the selected bench while retaining placement. Save a named preset to reuse its settings.

  • Upper leg trim sits directly below the seat and defaults to 3/4 x 3/4 inch Scotia. It must fit above a setback slope or foot cutout and clear any seat molding. Rails and aprons interrupt trim at their joints. Left/right exposed-end and back-panel choices are independent of the base.
  • Select the whole bench and use Apply Finish to apply the exterior appearance to its seat, supports, backs, base and upper leg trim. These open-bench parts are treated as exposed. Finish changes preserve stock material IDs and persist after resizing; cabinet interior and front-edge finishes remain separate cabinet options.
  • Base trim must fit on the straight lower support. Keep it below a setback slope. Footed panels need a square cutout at least as tall as the base; use separate legs for full wraps beside shaped openings. Narrow spaces that would make trim overlap are rejected.
  • This tool creates open benches. Enclosed seating cabinets use the existing cabinet tools.
  • Pick Span is available for new benches at the model root. Close group/component editing first. It measures a level front edge, retains configured height and depth, and creates a one-time fit rather than a live wall link. Review the preview before pressing Enter to place.
  • A molding preview shows its path; SketchUp uses the selected saved trim profile for the actual detail. Missing profiles block rebuilding until restored or replaced.
  • Manually modified managed geometry is protected from automatic replacement. Read the current selection again after external edits or changing editing context.
  • Shaped supports retain their contour in part metadata. Profiled seat edges require machining review; this tool does not automatically generate their router toolpaths.
Adaptive assemblies and Fit Cabinet to Gap

Assemble — Adaptive Assemblies

Captures application-built furniture as a saved design with sizing rules. Regenerates its cabinets, panels and connected finishes to fit a span, front rectangle or bounding space while retaining the design and independent section depths.

How to use: Close group editing and select the cabinets and related application-built components. Open Assemble > Adaptive Assemblies and Capture selection. Give the design a name. Select blocks in the preview and choose fixed, flexible, matched or proportional dimensions. Base heights and component depths are fixed initially; shared boundaries preserve alignment. Capture includes finishes for wholly selected connected runs. Crown and countertop guides represent finished elevations. Draw a TV/focal opening in Front view, then enter actual object width/height and clearance on each side. Neighbor links are suggested from the captured layout and shown under Relationships. Select the opening and expand Boundary relationships to add, remove or edit its edge links and signed offsets. Set overall dimensions or pick a span, front rectangle, or rectangle followed by depth. Inspect the model preview; Enter rebuilds, Tab flips direction, Escape cancels. Save the design to reuse it, or select a placed assembly and Capture selection to update its dimensions. Choose a different crown where one is present in the design. Use the single-cabinet profile selector to fit a saved cabinet style into a gap. Drawer, door, shelf and cabinet types remain part of the saved design.

  • Native picking, Follow Me profiles and actual geometry rebuilding require SketchUp acceptance testing for this new workflow. Automated solver, host-double lifecycle and browser tests do not prove the native solid kernel.
  • The picker operates from the model root. Captured furniture must be level, unscaled and share one orientation; room rotation and nested groups are supported. Mirrored or differently oriented components require a separate design.
  • Select application-built pieces with saved recipes. Unknown loose geometry, orphaned run finishes and manually modified managed products are reported rather than silently dropped. Close doors and pullouts before capture so their open pose does not inflate the measured envelope.
  • This is sizing of one design. Cabinet counts and front configurations are retained; there is no automatic conversion from drawers to doors. Construction-specific limits, internal locked layouts and fixed cutouts may prevent a requested size.
  • Orange guide blocks do not create geometry. A TV guide uses actual outside dimensions, not the advertised diagonal. Clearance is added to those dimensions when a fixed object dimension is entered.
  • Profiles and materials still require their local assets. Export includes the design settings; exact custom trim assets can be transferred with the existing trim package tools. Missing crown assets require restoration or explicit replacement.
  • Model edits outside the assembly configurator invalidate automatic replacement. Recapture the constituent application-built components when changing the underlying design. New instances receive independent identities; updating preserves the selected outer occurrence and placement.
  • Connected span shelves and mantels receive sizing guides for elevation and depth. Toe-kick and base-trim guides retain their stock height and floor reference. Geometry outside the chosen fitted envelope is rejected.
Customer Drawings and Shop Breakdowns

Output — Customer & Shop Drawings

Creates separate drawing packages for customer review and shop fabrication from measured model geometry. Customer pages describe finished sizes and usable interiors. Shop pages identify assembled parts and show separated components with optional dimensions.

How to use: Close group editing, select the cabinets or built-in, then open Output > Customer & Shop Drawings. Capture selection. Tick customer scopes, views and dimensions independently of shop breakdowns. Preview each output page and tick only pages to include. Create selected scenes or export selected drawings. After editing source geometry, reopen the saved drawing set with Refresh from source and regenerate it. Generate a new set to retain the previous revision.

  • Scenes and exported annotations are measured snapshots, not live linked dimensions. Refresh and regenerate after changing the source. Generated labels and dimension lines are drawing geometry for consistent model-sized text. You can add normal SketchUp dimensions to the projected edges. Manual annotations are not included in configurator exports and are removed when their generated set is replaced.
  • Customer and shop exports are in separate folders. Each contains SVG, DXF and printable HTML. Print the HTML to PDF using your browser. DXF geometry uses inches at true projected size; labels may display inches or millimeters. DXF annotations are LINE and TEXT entities, not associative CAD dimensions. Do not measure an isometric projection to infer a true length; its dimension labels carry measured lengths.
  • Select level furniture with a common cabinet orientation. Captured animated doors and drawers use their saved closed position. Source geometry is not moved. Unknown parts have measured size but may lack construction-specific dimensions. Loose faces mixed with nested parts must be grouped before capture.
  • Shop part dimensions describe modeled geometry; saved stock dimensions and machining notes are separate columns in the shop CSV. These are not automatically allowances, joinery instructions or certified cut sizes. Review grain, machining and stock allowances before cutting. The CSV covers the captured assembly, even when only some shop views are selected.
  • Cross-sections use one configurable percentage through each subject. Front cuts use depth, side cuts use width, and plan cuts use height. A side section only dimensions shelves in the intersected bay. Choose individual cabinet views to expose differing depths and component interiors.
  • Native SketchUp scene, style and text generation requires host acceptance testing. Automated geometry, host-double and browser checks do not establish native rendering acceptance. Large selections are limited to 600 parts, 200000 captured edges/triangles and 400 pages; split larger projects into assemblies.
Decorative Cabinet Backs

Design and Edit — Back & Top

Adds beadboard, V-board or shiplap detail to the interior face of the cabinet back using the Decorative Sheet profiles. The back remains one panel with its existing material, thickness and construction method.

How to use: Open Back & Top in Design or Edit. Choose Back panel surface, then choose vertical or horizontal detail, spacing on center and a minimum flat border. Build or apply changes. Choose Plain to remove the detail.

  • Supports rectangular backs in straight, blind and bookshelf cabinets, including combined cabinets. Angled corner return backs and backs altered by fitted cutouts or bevels are not supported. The corner-family editor uses its standard plain back.
  • Back thickness must be at least 1/8 inch. Spacing is 1 to 120 inches and minimum flat border is 1/32 to 12 inches. Actual flat borders may be larger to preserve exact spacing and symmetry. If a complete detail cannot fit, the build reports an error rather than silently creating a plain panel.
  • The pattern is sized to visible bay boundaries. Shelves can cover parts of the pattern. Each bay allows up to 256 repetitions. Shiplap balances the whole joint footprint, which includes its asymmetric lap.
  • Decorative machining requires shop review; the cutlist retains the original panel blank size and material. These surface details are not automatically qualified CNC toolpaths.
  • Native SketchUp Boolean geometry and final appearance require host acceptance testing. Automated specification, coordinate-adapter and browser tests do not substitute for native visual review.
Drawer and Spreader Clearances

Design and Edit — Drawers

Sizes drawer boxes within actual structural openings, including the spreaders behind closed drawer fronts. Spreaders stay centered between adjacent closed fronts. Solid dividers retain the selected cabinet stock thickness.

How to use: Choose a slide profile and front layout, then select spreaders or solid dividers. Set top and bottom box offsets. Build or apply changes. Offsets can make a box smaller, but cannot reduce the selected slide's minimum clearances. If a box cannot fit, increase its opening or reduce the spreader height.

  • Verified current US profiles include TANDEM 563H, 563F, 563. and edge 554H, plus MOVENTO 763H, 763. and 769. Minimum cabinet depths depend on series and length. The existing 760H/766H profile IDs retain legacy length data; the current US catalog does not qualify those regional length tables.
  • Long MOVENTO 769 runners (24, 27 and 30 inches) reserve an additional 3 mm below the box for inset face-frame applications. TANDEM F uses a different inside-width deduction for thicker drawer-side stock.
  • Hardware shown in the model remains simplified proxy geometry. Locking-device-specific front setback, mounting holes, rear brackets, TIP-ON, SERVO-DRIVE and specialty bottom-mount/waste systems require their own installation instructions. This change does not claim every Blum SKU or drilling pattern is qualified.
  • Interior trays retain their explicit heights and positions; fit review reports conflicts rather than silently moving them. Existing models need an explicit rebuild/apply to update geometry.
